Let Color Blocking do the Talking

With the sun peeking out from behind those end of the season snowfalls (fingers crossed) it’s time to put that puffy winter coat away and a little shine to your wardrobe.

The Color-Blocked Tech Mesh Polo available from Ralph Lauren Boys is a great way to start the spring season and bring on the blue skies. Designed with alternating royal and navy blue sections and embroidered patches, it draws the eye with a pleasant harmony of hues. The first of our color blocking champions of the day, the shirt pairs well with light jeans or chino shorts in a solid color of your choosing (blue goes with everything)!

Matching is all fine and well but putting together complementary contrasting pieces is the way to make your style stand out.

Take the VICC0, a contemporary multi-hue creation from the Tallia Orange Spring 2018 collection of menswear. This sport coat, dress shirt, belt and pant combination is an expertly crafted walk up and down the color wheel. The texture woven into the coral coat bounces off its light lining and matches the tan belt at the center. The white dress shirt with clustered blue dots plays off the dark blue slim pants which together make the coat pop all the more. Designed to draw and offset attention with its many lovely tones, the color blocking can do all the talking.

When it comes to color blocking, you can never go wrong by falling back on two old favorites: the checks and the cardinal colors.

If you aren’t sure about matching the rest of your outfit or feel daunted at the thought of putting together the right painter’s palette of pieces, the Horst Check Tie from Original Penguin Ties and Bowties will soothe the qualms and bolster your color confidence. Available in blue, navy, or red, the pattern subtly weaves its multi-toned boxes and adds understated interest to any look.

Deep rich color with downplayed whispers of detail is another way to rock the color block.

One way to achieve this method is with the Wellington Stripe Tie available from Perry Ellis Ties. Made with dark plum stitching and softly criss-crossed with burgundy, white, and navy stripes, the tie radiates elegance and fashion know-how. You can use the colors in an accessory as a guide for corresponding choices for the rest of your ensemble, a trick for the keen color connoisseur! In this case a good match would be burgundy pants, a white shirt, and a navy suit jacket.

With all that attention to color coordination you may want to take a rest when it comes down to undergarments.

I would recommend the W Hotel Boxer Briefs from Tango Hotel for the first layer of your clothing, a refreshing mishmosh of colors displayed as a sky high graphic of midtown Manhattan. Worry not about matching these boxers to your fashion ambitions, simply enjoy the comfort engineering and relaxed breathability. Remember to go with your instincts when pairing different pieces and to step outside the comfort zone even when you think you might clash. Never, however, compromise on comfort for that first layer no one’s seeing, you can let the color rubric slide when choosing this one.
